The FHSS Writing Lab provides free writing help for students within the BYU College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. This includes students from the Anthropology, Economics, School of Family Life, Geography, History, Neuroscience, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology disciplines.

Fall 2021/Winter 2022 Hours: Monday through Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. Closed for devotionals.

Who works at the Lab?

Our advisors are friendly undergraduate students studying a variety of social science disciplines. They have extensive writing experience and training in teaching writing skills.

I'm a student in the FHSS College. How can the lab help me?

We offer individual, face-to-face sessions to help you become a better writer. We focus on global aspects of writing, such as thesis construction, organization, transitions, idea development, logical coherence, style, and argument clarity. We welcome writers with papers at any stage in the writing process.

How can I get an appointment?

You can schedule an appointment via phone, in-person contact, or online action, but we do take walk-ins (time permitting). Sign up for an appointment at

I'm taking a canvas course/I'm unable to attend in-person due to personal reasons. Can I have an online appointment?

If you are taking other classes on BYU campus, you must still come to the Writing Lab in person. However, if you are not living in Utah this semester, please email us at for online appointments. The FHSS Writing Lab uses Zoom to conduct online appointments.

  • Sessions are limited to one 30-minute appointment per class per day.
  • We do not help with graduate school applications, scholarship essays, cover letters, résumés, WRTG 150 papers, or other papers for classes outside the FHSS College.
  • The Lab is closed for university holidays.
  • You may bring your computer or a hard copy; we do not work with a phone, tablet, etc.
  • Masks are required for in-person appointments.
