Appointments in the Writing Lab are 20-minute conversations with an advisor about the student's writing. The advisor will read through the paper with the student, answer any questions, and work with the student to strengthen the paper and the student's skills as a writer. The student and the tutor may discuss any aspect of the writing project or process.

Writing Lab advisors will discuss writing assignments and make suggestions on approaching a topic, organizing a paper, developing personal style, or correcting recurring errors. Advisors may also direct students to other resources for further assistance. Advisors will not edit or proofread a paper or write any part of your paper for the student.

Will I know if my have used the lab?

Yes. As part of our services, and at the instructor's request, the tutor may give the student a report slip or notify the instructor by email. The paper slips and the email reports let teachers know that the students have taken the initiative to improve as a writer; they do not evaluate the students, the assignments, or the instructors in any way.

Is it okay for me to bring take-home exams to the Writing lab?

For take-home exams, some instructors specify whether you may or may not bring your work to the Writing Lab. If this issue is not explicity addressed in the syllabus, we normally depend on your sense of whether the instructor has recommended the Writing Lab or would condone a visit for take-home exams. Since your instructor may be informed that you have been here, it is your responsibility to make this determination.

I have some suggestions for improving Writing Lab services. Where can I send them?
